SHOWstudio: Valentino Couture SS17

This morning I was at SHOWstudio to discuss Valentino’s Haute Couture S/S 17 show alongside Lou Stoppard, Lucy Norris and Deborah Milner.

With Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli separating last summer, it’s quite a unique situation with them both launching their couture solo debuts – for Dior and Valentino – at the same time.
It’s fascinating to see how the two of them develop their own signatures, having worked together for so long.
Perhaps more complicated for Grazia who has to absorb the Dior signature, but still it will be interesting how Piccioli works on his own. We talk a lot in the discussion about the nature of collaboration and the challenges of working alone.
However if this first ‘dreamscape’ collection is anything to go by, Piccioli is only going to build on the success he had with Grazia.
The beautiful collection featured wide trousers, loose, long Grecian style dresses, with stunning pleating. The silhouettes were modest yet feminine – very contemporary.
